While medical cannabis is stigmatised Australia-wide, a team of young Australians are working together to create a cannabis positive community online.
James King first launched Cannabis Place in 2018, providing a space for cannabis-loving Australians to come together without judgement. Since then, Cannabis Place has blossomed into a five-person team of cannabis-positive creators with a mission to provide Australians and New Zealanders with stigma-free information.
While cannabis clinics provide patients with medication-specific data, there is little support online for Australians looking to adjust to the complexities of life on a stigmatized drug.
As of June 30, over 50,000 Australians have a prescription for medical cannabis. According to the National Household Drug Survey, a further 600,000 Australians self-medicate with cannabis.
Nationwide, the rights of medical cannabis patients are not fully protected by law – even if patients are on the Special Access Scheme (SAS). Patients with THC in their system can fail drug tests and be fired from their jobs, as well as lose their licenses with no legal remedy. While our laws declare THC a dangerous cannabinoid, many Schedule 8 cannabis medications contain the cannabinoid.
Over the past two years, Cannabis Place has given their readers information you wouldn’t find elsewhere online, from finding the right cannabis clinic to navigating the weird world of compounding pharmacies, and providing expert advice on cannabis medications for pets.
As Australia moves towards fully legalising cannabis, Cannabis Place will continue to support its cannabis-positive community, with James King writing:
“We are excited to have the opportunity to participate in the industry as we move closer to full-legalisation, and to communicate with Australians and businesses on how the industry will be shaped.”
Monthly, Cannabis Place reaches 20,000 Australians and supports themselves through the sale of local cannabis-themed art.
We’re excited to share Cannabis Place with you, definitely check out their website and give them a follow for more great cannabis-related information.
