In a recent gathering of Labor supporters in the Swan region of Western Australia, Bill Shorten has asserted there will be no plans to legalise cannabis under his government.
The rather large gathering turned its eyes to the world of cannabis and its pondering legalisation thanks to a well thought out question from an audience member.
She begins with the overwhelming figures, that there are around 2.5 – 3 million regular cannabis users in Australia (which is accurate). Following which, her frustration shows after she points out the Greens, Liberal Democrats, and even One Nation have all articulated cannabis policies, with Labor sitting on the fence.
A strong statement concluded her question:
Where are we heading with cannabis? Because the rest of the world’s [already] going.
Bill was quick to thank the supporter for sticking with them and continuing to vote for Labor, but was even quicker to come out with:
We’re not going to legalise cannabis….uuhhhmmmm
We estimate 9% of the audience applauded the statement.
One thing Bill did mention, was that the access scheme for medicinal cannabis needed to be sorted out. Which he’s said before, claiming he’d break the law for medicinal cannabis.
He adds even though he smoked cannabis at university, he doesn’t want his kids smoking it now.
